From Bauhaus to Resor House
On October 7, 2026, the opening evening of The Pioneering Spirit—the joint AIA Wyoming and Third Annual AIA College of Fellows Western Mountain Region Design Conference—will bring together Dirk Lohan, FAIA, Pulitzer Prize–winning architecture critic and journalist Paul
Goldberger, and the Resor family to honor Mies van der Rohe’s enduring legacy in America—and their Wyoming commission, where that legacy began. In celebration of Mies’s milestone 140th birthday, the evening will also offer, with our partner the Mies van der Rohe Society, Chicago, a preview of Katherine Lo’s forthcoming documentary, Mies and Me.
The evening commemorates Mies’s first American commission—the unbuilt Resor House of 1937—which opened a door to modernism in America and extended Mies’s career as doors to intellectual and creative freedom were closing across Europe. The program will include the inaugural Lost Architecture Award presentation, the exhibition From Bauhaus to Resor House, Dirk Lohan’s Mies and Me presentation, a preview of the forthcoming documentary, a milestone birthday toast, and a concluding panel discussion.

Presented in partnership with the Brno City Museum and Villa Tugendhat, Czechia, on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of Villa Tugendhat’s inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
7:15 p.m. | LOST ARCHITECTURE AWARD
The inaugural AIA COF WMR Lost Architecture Award is presented to Dirk Lohan, FAIA, and the Resor family in recognition of the enduring legacy of the unbuilt Resor House.
7:30 p.m. | MIES AND ME
In a remarkable symmetry, the 88th anniversary of his grandfather’s submission of 800 drawings for the Resor House coincides with Dirk Lohan’s own 88th year and his first visit to Wyoming. Dirk's presentation interweaves Mies’s work and legacy with reflections on his own architectural career.

A preview of Katherine Lo’s forthcoming documentary, Mies and Me, presented with our partner the Mies van der Rohe Society, Chicago, followed by a toast celebrating Mies van der Rohe’s milestone 140th birthday. The full film will be presented in the coming year.

Architecture, Legacy, and Fellowship and a Milestone Birthday Toast
This intimate dialogue brings together Dirk Lohan, FAIA, with Pulitzer Prize–winning architecture critic and journalist Paul Goldberger, and members of the Resor family in a spirit of fellowship across families, disciplines, and generations. Their insights will meet the accomplishments, experiences, and questions of the audience—each deepening the other.

AIA College of Fellows Western Mountain Region
From 1959 through 2021, the American Institute of Architects’ Western Mountain Region was committed to effecting positive change through the power of design and design leadership. Those sixty-plus years demonstrated the impact the Region could have on the profession, its communities, and young and emerging professionals.
Then everything changed. AIA National discontinued the Regions, and more than sixty years of leadership, tradition, and a robust regional culture were suddenly lost.
BUT NOT ANYMORE . . .
Since 2023, representatives from eight Western Mountain states have worked with renewed vigor and enthusiasm to bring back the Region—this time through the College of Fellows. The AIA College of Fellows Western Mountain Region unites more than 210 Fellows across Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, New Mexico, Nevada, Utah, and Wyoming—a geographic area encompassing nearly one-third of the continental United States.
Together, AIA Wyoming and AIA COF WMR are poised to effect positive change with dramatic impact. We are just getting started. Join us!
